WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court agreed Tuesday to take up New Jersey’s bid to permit sports betting at its casinos and racetracks, a case that would lead different states to try to find a share of the profitable marketplace.
The justices will assess a lower court ruling against the state, hoping to seize some of the anticipated $150 billion illegally wagered on sports every 12 months.
Gov. Chris Christie and supporters inside the state Legislature attempted for years to legalize sports betting to bolster the casino and horse racing industries. The casino enterprise, after a period of activity losses and closings, has currently been doing better.

The case can be argued within the fall. Daniel Wallach, a legal professional in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and an expert in sports regulation, said the case should cause a nationwide repeal of the federal ban.
The Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the New Jersey law last year, ruling that the regulation violated the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, which forbids nationally authorized sports playing.
“This is the day that New Jersey has been anticipating for years,” said Wallach, who has intently accompanied New Jersey’s legal efforts to overturn the ban.
The court docket jumped into the case even after the Trump administration urged the justices not to get involved, placing the governor and the president he campaigned for on opposite sides.
President Donald Trump owned the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City, which closed in late October under the ownership of a fellow billionaire, Carl Icahn, who bought it in March and sold it to Hard Rock International. The corporation plans to reopen under its own logo next year.
Speaking on a sports radio show this month, Christie criticized the federal authorities for restricting sports betting even as permitting states to legalize recreational marijuana, even though it’s unlawful under federal regulation.
